Located 10 miles west of Fredericksburg, VA. This was the site of one of the Civil War's most critical engagements, April 27 to May 6, 1863. Known as "Lee's masterpiece," it was a strategic triumph, and is still studied by military men.
Park roads have interpretive paintings, signs and exhibits, presenting an essential link in the campaigns around Fredericksburg. There are walking trails at Fairview and Hazel Grove.
Highlights:
Only brick foundations remain of the Chancellorsville Inn, Union headquarters which burned during the battle. The Lee-Jackson Bivouac is the site of the last conference between the two soldiers. During the battle, the woods caught fire and hundreds of wounded on both sides perished. Catharine Furnace is the remains of an ironworks. Old Salem Church, several miles east, was a civilian refuge before a 2-day battle around it, and a Confederate hospital afterwards.
